Chamberlin – “Little Secrets” (Passion Pit cover)

Vocally, it’s easy to pigeonhole Chamberlin into the Fleet Foxes and Band of Horses camp.  Their music deviates pretty far from their folk rock brethren, however.  Chamberlin explores some of the more electric sides of indie rock, incorporating shiny guitar melodies, throwing out the kind of licks that wouldn’t be out of place in a prog-leaning jamband.  It all comes across as pretty ambitious for a young band.  On the other hand, Chamberlin sometimes sounds disconnected when they are throwing too much out there.  As much as I like their musical explorations, Chamberlin sounds best when they go for a sparse landscape.  Of note is Chamberlin’s most recent release, a strong set of covers to benefit the flooding of their home state of Vermont, including heartfelt takes on Passion Pit, Vampire Weekend and Kanye West/Bon Iver.

As you may already know KASE 2 passed a few days back after a struggle with cancer. I didn’t know KASE personally but was introduced to him, his style, and his one liners in the Graffiti documentary STYLE WARS.  There’s a nice write up on KASE 2 here. Rest in Peace to the “King of Styyylle”

Photo Triptych of Possibilities in Cairo

by Trent Gilliss, senior editor

Amidst the massive amount of voices tweeting and retweeting happenings on the ground in Egypt, Nevine Zaki’s photo above serendipitously found its way into my Twitter stream with the caption:

“A pic I took yesterday of Christians protecting Muslims during their prayers #jan25.”

During the wee hours of this morning, I find myself deeply moved by her new-found love for Egypt as a woman living and working in Cairo:

“The most beautiful thing about #Jan25 is that we all suddenly discovered an incredible love for #Egypt that we never knew was still in us

Living here presented always presented a struggle for us in 1 way or another, but since #jan25, we all suddenly felt alive again.”

With the image below, she writes, “Can it get more peaceful than this?”

Prayers in Tahrir Square

But, surprisingly to me, it’s the idea behind the following photo that strikes me as most decent, most civil, most caring, most mundane: residents of Cairo showing their goodness by cleaning up what must be an incredible amount of refuse during the chaos: “These trash bags are all over the city, its [sic] from the citizens who cleaned the streets.”
